The mission of the CITRIS Data and Democracy Initiative is to explore the complex evolving relationships between data (internet, smartphones, social media, large datasets, etc) and democracy (online deliberation, collective intelligence, fair access, diversity, consensus). Our goal is to enhance the abilities of individuals of all backgrounds in their individual and collective awareness, participation, discovery, and decision-making related to critical civic and societal issues.

The Data and Democracy Initiative is collaborating with the UC Santa Cruz Center for Games and Playable Media, and UC Berkeley’s Center for New Media (BCNM), Human Rights Center, Social Apps Lab, the Algorithms, Machines, and People (AMP) Lab, and the MIT Geospatial Data Center and the HADR Center for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief among others including companies and government and non-profit organizations. “This is exactly what governments need,” noted Alec Ross, Senior Advisor for Innovation to U. S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
